Coronavirus testing in Slovenia appears to be expensive, inefficient and limited by domestic testing resources. Better solutions are possible. I have heard government announcements that testing has had to be slowed down because of capacity problems. The request for an asymptomatic test can cost citizens EUR 100 or more. This obviously discourages asymptomatic testing and increases infection rates. However, there are private laboratories in Europe (e.g. Dante Labs in Italy) that offer PCR testing for less than EUR 60, including overnight shipping to and from Slovenia. If Slovenia were to request quotations from other European laboratories for a larger number of tests, this cost would be even lower for consolidated shipments: perhaps €30 or €40 per test. This would increase the service to Slovenian citizens and reduce costs by at least 50%. Based on 165,000 tests last month, this would save €82,000 per month in testing costs. Most importantly, it would save Slovenian lives.
