I propose to the government to limit the amount of freight traffic on AC and HC. Already today the situation is unsustainable, as the slightest disruption on the network causes congestion for several kilometres, lasting for hours. Instead of taking action, the Government is even boasting about how freight traffic is only going to grow and selling this to us as proof of strong economic growth. The truth, of course, is different. Increased freight traffic is not the result of economic growth in the country, but the result of the fact that we have become a corridor for all the dirty transit traffic between Eastern European countries and Western Europe. So we have accepted a role that our developed neighbours (e.g. Austria) are shying away from. We get absolutely nothing from this transit (apart from the fact that the DARS pay themselves high salaries from the tolls they collect) and we do not create any added value, since the cost of the toll is the only money that the Eastern European hauliers leave with us. I therefore propose to the Government to start introducing the following measures to reduce transit freight traffic: - charging high parking fees at rest areas - limiting the total number of freight vehicles on individual sections - banning freight vehicles from driving at night - limiting the speed limit to 70 km/h All these measures are in line with European legislation, so the Government's response should not refer to directives from Brussels....
