We are all aware that there is more and more traffic in Slovenia's major cities, especially when people are commuting to school and work. Traffic lights that are designed only for pedestrians to cross have an indirect effect on slowing down traffic and resulting congestion, which benefits no one. Given that there are no regular classes for primary, secondary and university students during the summer holidays between 25 June and 1 September, I propose that all traffic lights that are only for pedestrians crossing (i.e. not a crossing) be switched off where the pedestrians are mainly schoolchildren during the summer holidays. If necessary, and if it is worthwhile, traffic lights may also be switched off during other holidays. Of course, if it is too far to the next pedestrian crossing (which is not the only one), the traffic lights are not switched off. This would save money on electricity, reduce the emissions of stationary (but lit) cars and speed up traffic, in particular making buses more punctual instead of waiting 1 minute at a traffic light because one pedestrian had to cross the road.
