Since the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia separates the Church from the State, I believe that this should apply in all areas. One of these areas is, of course, the area of holidays and public holidays. I therefore propose that a resolution be adopted to separate all current religious holidays from public holidays. Let me emphasise in advance that religious holidays would not be abolished, persecuted or otherwise denigrated in any way, but only recategorised, from holidays to working days. Religious "days off" would thus be allocated to public holidays, which are currently not yet public holidays. Since there are six religious public holidays under current legislation (although two of these are inevitably Sundays) and five public holidays that are not public holidays, one could even consider reinstating 2 January as a public holiday, or creating another holiday between the two farthest apart in time, so that the holidays are more evenly spaced. At the same time, I would also suggest that consideration be given to the advisability of Labour Day being celebrated on two consecutive days, as at present no other public holiday is celebrated for two days, and it is somewhat disruptive to the orderliness. Instead of 2 May, we could again introduce a new public holiday between the two farthest apart in time. Of course, it would be possible for the worker to take a day off on working days that would otherwise fall on religious holidays, if he consulted his employer sufficiently early. That would satisfy everyone. The calendar of holidays and public holidays would look like this without religious holidays: day holiday 1. 1. New Year 8. 2. Prešeren Day 27. 4. Day of Resistance against the Occupier 1. 5. Labour Day 2. 5. Labour Day 8. 6. Primož Trubar Day 25. 6. National Day 17. 8. Unification of Prekmurje Slovenians with the mother nation 15. 9. Day of the return of Primorska to the motherland 25. 10. Sovereignty Day 1. 11. Day of Remembrance of the Dead 23. 11. Rudolf Maister Day 26. 12. Independence and Unity Day
