I propose to introduce a third green light interval at junctions for pedestrians, separate from the green intervals for vehicles. The problem is that often there is only one lane for vehicles going straight and turning right at intersections. If there is a lot of pedestrian traffic crossing the road at the same time, they can virtually block all vehicle traffic at a green light if they are lucky enough to be the first in the queue to turn right. Then long queues build up behind that vehicle, which often leads to collapse at rush hour. Often thanks to pedestrians. I therefore propose to introduce a system where the vehicles in the longitudinal direction have the green light first, then those in the transverse direction, then pedestrians in all directions (diagonally as well). This way we make sure that the vehicles always have a clear path for the pedestrians, and the traffic flows more smoothly as a result.
