I suggest that the government, perhaps only temporarily, in times of crisis, pass a special law and introduce a shorter 6-hour working day in the health service (or elsewhere). This would relieve the burden on nurses and health technicians, who are currently under a great deal of pressure and who say that, because no new nurses are being recruited and there are too few of them, they are unable to use the free hours that they accumulate. This would give them adequate rest, but it is true that they would have a slightly lower salary as a result. On the other hand, for the huge number of unemployed nurses who are registered with the employment service, this would enable them to get a job, even if it is part-time. Something is better than nothing. This would certainly kill two birds with one stone. It would probably be a solution elsewhere, too. People would work part-time, but they would still earn something. As it is, we hear that some people are burning out and others are giving up because they cannot find work. If we balanced this a little, we might solve a lot of problems. But a compromise would really be needed, and if employees realised that they could do more for themselves and their children with a little more free time, there might be more happy families.
