As there has been a lot of talk recently about increasing penalties again to improve road safety, and despite the fact that we have some of the highest penalties in Europe, nothing has stuck, I propose the following to improve safety:
Some minimum standards should be introduced for the purchase of new vehicles, to be judged by experts, but ABS, ESP, airbags... have been proven to save lives and also to prevent accidents. ABS, 2x airbags should be a standard feature in every new car purchase, and manufacturers are also fitting them in cars for the European market, which is why our importers (say Dacia, Hyundai ...) are importing cars for the African market without any equipment in order to lower prices.
