I propose to change the signs for certain speed limit zones. Most of these signs are rectangular with a circle drawn inside with a 30kmh limit. It would be better to change the whole signs to round shapes (as they should be for speed limits) and complement them with a complementary zone sign. I would also suggest that ALL such signs start to be placed like any other along the road in a prominent position and not at public lighting (I've seen a few) where they are less visible. To give one example, you have to be superhuman to get through an intersection/roundabout without committing an offence. You drive into the roundabout as per the rules, look in the mirrors, do the same when you leave, and in both cases you have to look out for cyclists and pedestrians (if there is a cycle path parallel to your car when you exit/enter the junction you have to look over your shoulder and back seat to make sure there is no cyclist with the right of way anywhere. Suppose there is a zone/restriction sign at the desired exit very close to the roundabout, which of course most people ignore because they have to deal with a thousand other things to avoid committing an offence already in the roundabout. Then one gets an astronomical fine (I think it's more than 300€) if one ignores the zone sign and drives 50 instead of 30 or 40. In fact, it is the fault of the person who put up the signs who is liable for this fine, not the driver who, presumably, would have driven in the zone at the limit. Anyone else not in on this? So I suggest that at some exits/exits from/on/on/about/roundabouts a sign be placed at least 20 metres ahead so that it can be seen at all. I have another suggestion, and that is imagine coming off a side road onto a road where there is a zone and the limit is 30, but there is no sign anywhere to indicate that. It is true that there is a sign at the beginning and the end of the zone indicating the beginning and the end of the zone. But what about in the middle? How is a driver supposed to know he is in a zone and not get a penalty if there is no way of knowing that he is doing something wrong. I suggest that traffic signs be erected at absolutely all entrances to the zones.
