If we want a good quality and friendly service in normal times, in Slovenia we unfortunately always have to pay out of our own pocket (dentistry, gynaecology, orthopaedics, physiotherapy, ultrasound,...). Our public system is generally unfriendly, has unreasonable queues and, as a rule, no one is held accountable for anything. We give a lot of money every month for health insurance; some of this money is directly visible on our gross salary and some of it is channelled through our employer. A person on a salary of EUR 1500 thus spends about EUR 350 on health insurance each month, over a working lifetime of 40 years this means about EUR 168 000. This is far too much for the quality of the health service we receive. Optional health insurance should allow us to choose our own provider. In order not to have too many bogus patients, I propose a 10-20% co-financing for all health services up to EUR 1000 (and of course a correspondingly reduced monthly premium).
