The Kleče Waterworks, an important source of drinking water for Ljubljana, is located on a busy road with many lorries. If an accident were to happen and an oil truck were to overturn and the fuel were to flow into the groundwater, there is a serious risk that the waterworks would have to be permanently closed due to contamination. The city would then lose one of its largest water sources. There are also busy roads along other water intakes in Slovenia. I suggest that wherever roads run alongside a water intake, the maximum speed limit for vehicles on straight roads should be the speed limit set by the Road Traffic Regulation Act for a residential area, and on winding roads the limit should be the same as the speed limit set by the Act for a speed restricted area. The lower the speed of the vehicle, the lower the risk of a collision between two vehicles and therefore the less likely a fuel spillage. Constant police surveillance should also be introduced on these roads near water intakes to monitor whether the speed limit is being respected.
