I suggest that the Government considers the possibility of a fairer penalty for the safety distance. Given that a decision will be taken in the near future to reduce some of the penalties, perhaps now would be a good time to make this proposal. In short, the penalty for the safety distance should be dynamic and thus fair for all road users. In practice, this would mean that the penalty would be €10.00 for every metre of insufficient safety distance. It is not right that the penalty should be uniform, because the seriousness of the offence varies considerably whether you have a safety distance of 70m or 5m at 130km/h. The law could also be designed in such a way that above 60% of the safety distance, the penalty would be €5.00 for each missing metre. Anything less than 60% is €10.00 per missing metre. It is absolutely not right that at 130km/h person A has 70m of safety distance and person B has 5m. In case both persons are caught by the police breaking the road traffic rules they both get the same fine which is high/low €200,00. The fact is that someone driving virtually on the back of your car deserves more than a measly €200,00 fine. A practical example; you are driving at 130km/h on the AC and you have 50 metres of safety distance to the vehicle in front of you. The fine you would receive for the offence would be 72m - 50m = 22m (22m*€5.00 = €110.00).
